about

An album combining different compositional approaches while melting various aethetics such as acoustic, electronic, ambient music, minimalism music and Chinese music. Each movement or part expresses different atmospheres and feelings.

The 1st Movement expresses the feeling of trying to escape from somewhere one's familiar with, and try to locate the peaceful new world. Using a more traditional acoustic instrumentation, while utilising and taking advantage of computer technologies, rendering an aesthetic feature that combines Chinese music, modern dance music and contemporary film music.

The 2nd Movement is about leaving the World and walking in the 'peaceful new world' or 'the Valley', which represents an 'utopian' concept of one's imaginary peace, leading one to re-think the definition of 'Peace and Noise'. Gradually moving out of the more traditional orchestration and instrumentation and moving into the territory of electronic music.

Instead of the 3rd Movement, this is the 3rd PART, to indicate that it has moved out of everything that has been suggested in the previous 2 movements. It still follows the narrative, but one's sense of presence has now been eliminated, one is the air floating in the sky, watching and sensing everything in the Valley without sentiment. All the previous instrumentation has now been cleared, the whole piece is composed of modular synth system, purely electronic music, making use of ambient and minimalist approaches and aesthetics, while employing and melting the texture, timbre found on Chinese acoustic instrument Guqin.

Xiaolian Zhang (Stefan)'s music is experimental in essence, sometimes inspired by hybrid film scoring, electroacoustic music and modular synth, drawing influences from the vibrant contemporary audio culture and reexamining Chinese cultural heritage.
