about

This piece was inspired by two ancient Chinese poems: Song of Gale (about 196 BC) by Liu Bang (256 BC to 195 BC), the first empire of the Han dynasty, and The Song of the Yi River (227 BC) by Jing Ke (? – 227 BC). Both of the poems express solemn and stirring emotions through the portray of the wind or the gale, therefore wind is the main element the piece expresses. This piece continues my attempt of using Chinese instrument creatively in Western orchestral music or the chorus without suggesting the Chineseness while experimenting the fusion of Hollywood film music style and the Chinese elements. The chorus is actually sung in phonetic alphabet by sampled library to weaken the impact of the language on the music. Although the two poems are in Chinese, they represent commonly encountered emotions and narratives that can be observed in the entire human history worldwide.

about

XLZ MUSIC London, UK

Xiaolian Zhang (Stefan)'s music is experimental in essence, sometimes inspired by hybrid film scoring, electroacoustic music and modular synth, drawing influences from the vibrant contemporary audio culture and reexamining Chinese cultural heritage.
